Common Misconceptions About Parvo

.tags

Canine Parvovirus, aka Parvo, is a disease that has sparked a number of rumors and myths. It is important to be aware of these and inform yourself as much as possible about the virus to protect your pets.

The first most common misconception is that only adult dogs can catch parvo. Unfortunately, while puppies are more likely to contract the disease due to a weaker immune system, a dog of any age can catch the virus. Many owners who miss the canine parvovirus vaccination when their dog is a puppy think that it will be OK and allow their dog to go without being vaccinated. This is unacceptable, and is putting the dog at serious risk.

The next most common myth is that if a dog has the vaccine they will be totally protected. Once upon a time, this used to be the case but nowadays it it sadly not that simple. Over recent years the virus has mutated so much that vaccinated dogs cannot be guaranteed protection any more. This is a sad reminder of how we must all make sure that we keep our dogs immunized vigilantly.

Many people think that once their dog has had the disease the virus will no longer be a problem. Sadly, the virus can live for up to a year in clothing and soil and hence it is very possible that the dog reinfects itself if the area is not bleached thoroughly. Special care needs to be taken in areas where dogs congregate such as animal shelters and parks.

Finally, some people think that if their dog succumbs to the virus then the only way to cure them is to go to the vet. In fact, there are a number of other alternatives available some of which actually work better than veterinary care. It is important that dog owners research these alternatives and come to a balanced decision.
