How Double Hung Windows are Made

One of the most familiar kinds of windows are the double hung windows. Double hung windows have a lower and upper sash that slides vertically in side jambs – each sash has its own separate groove – or they slide in full-width metal weatherstripping. This kind of window gives the maximum opening for ventilation: an entire one-half of the total area of the window. To hold it in place no matter where in the window it is located, each sash has balances, springs, or compression weatherstripping.

Compression weatherstripping is a very good idea for several reasons. For one thing, it provides tension and acts as a counterbalance. Another thing that compression weatherstripping does is it prevents the infiltration of air. This helps make your home more energy efficient, since you won’t have cold air seeping in or out when it isn’t supposed to be. Compression weatherstripping comes in various forms. Some types will allow you to remove the sash easily so that you can repair it or paint it.

The sides and top of the double hung windows frames are called jambs. These are made of 1-inch lumber. The width lets the window be used with drywall or plater. Sills are made from 2-inch lumber and then are sloped around 3 inches. This provides good drainage so water doesn’t build up on your double hung windows. Sashes can be divided in any number of lights by muntins – small wood members – and ranch style homes often have two horizontal lights. Cape cod style homes usually have six or eight. Some companies will provide preassembled dividers that you can simply snap into place and divide your window yourself. This saves you from maintentance and painting.

The assembled frames fit in the rough openings over building paper. The building paper helps minimize air flow. Frames are plumbed and nailed into side studs and header through where the blind stops are at the sides or through the casings. Make sure that corrosion-resistant nails are used in places where the nails are exposed, such as on the casings.

Hardware involves sash lifts fastened to the bottom rail, though these are sometimes replaced by a finger groove. There are also sash fasteners or locks at the meeting rail. These lock the window, but they also keep the sash together and give a fit that is tight enough to prevent the drafts from seeping through the window.

Double hung windows are used in a variety of ways. They can be doubled, used as a single unit, or can be arranged in groups of three or more. Some people even gain a window wall by using a double hung window on either side of a stationary window. This is a beautiful effect that can enhance the beauty of any home.
