.tags

Kidney stones form when there is a decrease in urine volume or an excess of stone-forming substances in the urine. The most common type of kidney stone contains Calcium in combination with either Oxalate or Phosphate. Other chemical compounds that can form stones in the urinary tract include Uric acid and the Amino acid Cystine.

Dehydration through reduced fluid intake or strenuous exercise without adequate fluid replacement increases the risk of kidney stones. Obstruction to the flow of urine can also lead to stone formation. Kidney stones can also result from infection in the urinary tract; these are known as struvite or infection stones.

Men are especially likely to develop kidney stones. The prevalence of kidney stones begins to rise when men reach their 40s, and it continues to climb into their 70s. People who have already had more than one kidney stone are prone to develop more stones. A family history of kidney stones is also a risk factor for the development of kidney stones.

Signs & Symptoms:

Pain-Fixed Renal Pain, Referred Pain in the ;Low Back and/or Side, Groin, or Abdomen; Hydronephrosis; Haematuria- Blood in the Urine; Tenderness in the Renal Angle; Muscle Rigidity; Swelling of Flanks; Increased Urination Frequency; Nausea & Vomiting; Urine Retension & Fever.

The Diagnosis of Kidney Stones is suspected by the typical pattern of Symptoms when other possible causes of the abdominal or flank pain are excluded. Imaging tests; CT scan; Intra Venous Pyelogram (IVP; an X-ray of the abdomen); Ultra Sound etc are done to confirm Kidney Stones.

In Ayurveda, Renal Calculi is compared to “Mutrashmari”, which is a stone like structure anywhere in the Mutravaha Srotas (Urinary System). Ashma=Stone, Ari=Enemy. The formation of a stone, which causes great pain and suffering to the body like an enemy is called “Ashmari”. It is a terrible disease like “Yama” (The God of Death). Mutrashmari is a common disease of Urinary System. Asmari is considered as one of the “Asta Mahagada” due to its Severity, Chronicity and Fatality.

The Line of Treatment for Ashmari is:

Nidana Parivarjanam (Avoiding the Root Cause); Specific Ahara & Vihara (Food Habits & Life Styles) are to be followed. Samshodhana Chikitsa (Panchakarma Procedures) like: Snehanam (Oleation), Swedanam (Suddation), Virecana Karma (Purgation), Vasthi Karma (Enemas) and Uttara Vasthi are recommended in the Management of Ashmari or the Renal Calculi. Samshamana Chikitsa mainly includes Researched Medicines to blow out the Calculi are prescribed according to the Patient’s Requirement, Severity of the Disease, Age etc.

Rather than having to undergo Treatment, It is best to avoid Kidney Stones in the first place. It can be especially helpful to drink more water. Water helps to flush away the substances that form Stones in the Kidneys. Reduction of Salt intake; High Fibre Diet and Potassium are important to reduce the risk of Stone Formation.

Depending on the Cause of the Kidney Stones and an Individual’s Medical History, Dietary Changes or Medications are sometimes recommended to decrease the likelihood of developing further Kidney Stones.
