Learn About Syphilis

Syphilis is a chronic infectious disease caused by the bacteria Treponema pallidum. it’s an unpleasant looking bacterial infection that is obtained by sexual intercourse. Syphilis is widespread in the USA and usually occurs in sexually active adults ages 20 to 29.

Symptoms are different in each stage of syphilis. Pregnant women can infect their fetus with syphilis.

The primary stage of this disease starts with painless sores on the body. Usually around the areas of the genitals, rectum, and mouth. You start to see these 2-3 weeks after first infection. The sores disappear in about 4-6 weeks even without a treatment. The bacteria from syphilis in your body now becomes inactive during this part of the primary stage.

The secondary stage of syphilis occurs in about 33% of people who have not had treatment for the first stage of syphilis 2-8 weeks after the first sores disappear. This stage will start with a rash somewhere on your body. The rash often appears on the palms of your hands. These symptoms will also go away without treatment and again, the bacteria becomes inactive in your system.

If all these stages go without treatment, you develop tertiary syphilis which is the final stage of syphilis. The infection spreads to the brain, nervous system, heart, skin, and bones. The dormant bacteria may be detectable either by visually seeing the side effects which isnt that hard to see, or through a blood test for syphilis. This stage can happen years after all the other stages.

Primary prevention includes abstinance, and using condoms. Make sure the person doesnt have an STD.

Secondary Prevention includes blood tests, and examining through microscopes

Tertiary Prevention includes treatments that can kill the infection but do not further reverse the damage it has caused.
