Making Changes to Your Lifestyle With Juicing


Juicing raw fruit and vegetables can bring some healthy habits into your home for the whole family, starting with the baby on upward to Grandma. Someone who has spent a lifetime eating traditionally cooked foods will have drawn very little nourishment from their daily food intake.

Raw foods provide all the nutrients and beneficial vitamins we ‘cook out’ of our food with conventional cooking processes. Boiling and stewing fresh food takes out just about every nutrient yet we continue to boil cabbage for 15 minutes; boil turnips and parsnips for even longer and happily stew vegetable soups for hours before we are satisfied it is fit for human consumption!

For people who cannot let go of the idea of their comfort food being hot, there is no reason why healthy raw foods cannot be heated as long as they are kept below 120ºF and a good eating temperature is actually around 110ºF. In the winter many converted raw foodies resort to heating their food – very few people are turned on by a cold plate of salad in the winter, no matter how nicely presented it might be.

Raw food pesto is delicious with pasta and may be rustled up so quickly with basil, parsley, garlic, pine nuts, salt and olive oil. Beginning a raw food regime begins with mixing raw and cooked foods and gradually, because raw foods are tastier and healthier, cooked foods are eaten less and less. Gradually your lifestyle changes: you lose weight, your general health improves and you have more energy.

There is nothing in the rule book that says everyone must launch themselves onto a raw food diet on day one and never allow cooked food to pass their lips forever. Taking the step toward healthier eating can be the first stage of a transition that will eventually be a new way of eating but many prefer that transition to be slow.

Many meat eaters make a decision to change to a vegetarian diet but take a couple of years to stop eating meat completely. Some start with eating only meat that is minced or shredded and gradually move on to eating a vegetable menu only. Similarly, raw food is a new concept for many people and their acceptance that raw food is better for them is the first step to a changed lifestyle.

Juicing is the key to eating a raw food diet. Learning to use a good quality juicer efficiently and creatively makes raw food tastier and more varied. The juicer is the new cooker for many modern families and in fact many would rather be without the cooker than the juicer! There are so many prepared foods that can be made in advance using a juicer and left in the fridge for snack food; the number one teenage standby! Juicers are not just used by fanatic health gurus; they are used more and more by average families with a desire to eat healthily.
