Launching an airline takes lots of money and patience – one reason why Virgin America’s debut in 2007 caught everyone’s eye. Another reason was its bright and breezy image, and attractive flight attendants. But on Thursday its owner Alaska Airlines announced the bad news that loyal fans have dreaded for months: the Virgin brand is being dumped. Andre-Pierre du Plessis takes a look at the rocky road, Richard Branson had to travel to give his airline wings – and ultimately let go of his dream.
