Reasons for a premature birth

An incompetent cervix begins to widen and thin before the pregnancy has gone to full term.Usually in the 2nd trimester does this problem show a high risk to the baby as premature labour can present itself leading to a premature birth.

If a  Baby Is born premature and if a pregnancy is under 22 weeks baby doesn’t make it.A baby that has gone 24 weeks gestation has a slightly better chance of survival but will need to spend many weeks in the NICU hospital and undergo lots of tests, monitoring, growth, developing of lung function ready for the big wide world. The Risk of infections for such tiny babies is high and a little one can sometimes have long term health problems due to being so premature and poorly at birth.

Is there anything that can be done for a woman with repreated misscarriages due to an incompetent cervix?

Yes Cervical incompetence may be corrected by cervical encerclage.A suture (stich) is performed under a general anesthetic when a pregnancy is between 14-16 weeks gestation. The stitch is removed around 38 weeks or sooner if a pregnant mum to be goes into labor early

A premature birth is more likely with a multiple pregnancy of triplets quads or more.

Twins may come slightly earlier than 39 weeks but the more babies that are carried inside a womb at once the more higher a risk pregnancy it is for the mum to be. As soon as a multiple pregnancy is diagnoised as in the case if triplets more frequent antenatal visits may be necessary.Finshing work early is advised, bed rest, or even a short stay in hospital towards the end of the pregnany to give the babies a much better chance of gaining weight and maturing inside the womb.

A premature birth is mainly caused by the fact that multiple babies will stretch the womb quicker than a baby. The cervix may begin to open earlier than would be expected by one baby.

Gestational diabetes usually comes to light during the second trimester of a pregnancy. The risk to the baby is lower than for women with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.

(Type 1 diabetes develops when the insulin-producing cells in the body have been destroyed and the body is unable to produce any insulin)

(Type 2 diabetes is when the body can still make some insulin, but not enough, or when the insulin that is produced does not work properly known as insulin resistance).

How can gestational diabetes effect a baby growing inside the womb.

Its important to attend regular antenatl visits as  uncontrolled gestational diabetes can mean problems for your baby, such asbeing born very large and with extra fat making delivery difficult and more dangerous for baby.low blood glucose levels right after delivery.

If you have gestational diabetes, your midwife andmedical team may recommend extra tests to check on baby, such as extra scans, to see how your baby is growing and baby kick counts to check your baby’s activity. Babies with mums -to-be of gestational diabetes can be born rather large at birth.

Pregnant women with good diabetes control and with further no complications, the pregnancy may be continued to 39-40 weeks. It is not uncommon for a pregnany woman with gestational diabetes to be hospitalized during the last trimester, especiailly if high blood pressure is also shown and baby could then born at 37 weeks premature. The weight of baby may still be quite large even at this gestation.C section rates are often higher than a non-diabetic pregnant women.

diabetes care after a delivery of baby

If breast-feeding reduce insulin dose further once lactation is well established.  The gestational diabetes recovers after birth, if problems arise discuss this at  the 6 weeks post natal checkup with the G.P. Mum and baby are a more at risk  after delivery of contracting type 2 diabetes later on in life.
