Lone Ranger Mentality
If your goal is to find a business opportunity on the Internet and make it work for you, there’s a big temptation to think you must do it all alone. Why does this happen?
First of all, there is this scenario of you sitting at your computer, often in the late hours of the night, surfing and searching and working. That scene screams out “It’s me against the world.” It fosters that Lone Ranger mentality.
Secondly, the concept of working at home, working on your own, having your own business is so that you don’t have to put up with all that static you have on your day job. The boss hanging over your shoulder, the co-workers gossiping, the corporate politics all working together to weigh you down. It’s because of this that you want to work from home and be on your own in the first place. And if that’s true, then doesn’t that mean you must work alone?
Yes and no.
Support and Accountability
Basically, you are developing your own business online, and it is definitely up to you to discipline yourself to “plan your work and work your plan.” No one is going to tell you to forget your favorite TV show get yourself to the computer to work on your business. No one is holding a gun to your head to force you to watch and study another Internet marketing training video. And if you can do that necessary work without any encouragement or upward strokes, then you’re miles ahead of the majority of folks. Most people do need encouragement. And most work better if they are accountable to someone.
Think about the sports arena. Many sports are team efforts where the team members work together, support one another, encourage one another and hold each other accountable. But even in sport such as golf, tennis and gymnastics, which are seemingly solo sports, those players still have a “team” to whom they look for that needed support. They have coaches and trainers they lean on for advice and help. If you were to ask them if they actually “go it alone,” the answer would probably be a strong no.
Perhaps your encouragement will come from the members of your immediate family. If that’s true then yea for you. But you are in the minority. Most individuals who launch out to create wealth through an Internet business don’t have family members on their side. In fact, those family members may be the ones who are deriding you and laughing at you. That’s not easy. And it presents yet another obstacle to overcome. (As if you didn’t have enough already.)
Look for a Mentor
So does this mean that since you can’t press through on your own, you just as well give up? No. What it means is you will be much better off if you find a business that is built on the powerful concepts of teamwork and helping one another. There are businesses out there whose entire premise is to derive joy in “making others wealthy.” They know that as they help others, it moves them closer to success.
You will do well to search until you find such a business. Then you will have a mentor or guide who is willing to work closely with you on your way to success.
After all, success solo really does suck! Making your first sale with no one to cheer for you is like making a hole-in-one on an empty golf course.
