The Best Grilled Bbq Pizza
. Have you ever tried to grill a pizza? Well, if not, I urge you to do so. It’s real easy and a lot of fun. Today I am going to write about a Barbecued grilled pizza. Now, if we are talking BBQ and pizza, then there must only be one topping that we can use. That’s right, pork! I think some nice spicy Italian sausage would be perfect for this recipe.
Lets start by talking about our dough. This is usually where people abort the recipe. As soon as they see anything that requires the science of yeast, they run. Fear not, there are plenty of ready made pizza crust as well as ready- to- roll dough balls. Both can be found at the local grocer. Today we are going to use a ready made pizza crust and doctor it up just a little.
First, take your ready made crust and brush it with a mixture of olive oil, garlic and dry basil. This will add an extra level of flavor to the dough. Then, instead of using tomato sauce, we are going to use BBQ sauce. You won’t believe how well this works. Just brush a layer of BBQ sauce on the crust and then top it with some chopped Italian sausage. At the very last minute sprinkle a hand full of mozzarella cheese on top.
Now that the pizza is ready for grilling, it’s now time to get our grill all set. The key to a really good grilled pizza is the heat of your grill. In most of my recipes I talk about how you should get your grill real hot and then turn it down before cooking. When grilling a pizza, it is a must to get the grill as hot as it can be, and then keep it hot. Once you open the lid of your grill, the heat will start to escape, so make sure your pizza is at arms length.
Now place your pizza on your oiled grill racks and close the lid. Let the pizza do its thing for about 7 minutes. Don’t worry about it burning, it wont. And don’t peak. After seven minutes, take a look, if the cheese is nice and melted and the sausage is bubbling, then we are all set. Remove your pizza from your grill and let it rest on a cutting board. Slice into squares or slices and serve.
The crusty grilled flavor of the dough is just like having your own coal fired pizza oven at home. The flavor of the BBQ Sauce is outstanding, it goes great with the sausage. The melted cheese is a huge bonus. It makes the whole pie come together, what a treat, this is a must try.
