What is sex addiction? In today’s video you’ll learn what are the 5 possible causes of sex addiction and how to recognize the 5 symptoms of addiction.
1. What Is Sex Addiction? Sexual addiction is best described as a progressive intimacy disorder characterized by compulsive sexual thoughts and acts. Like all addictions, it negatively impacts the addict and the family members as the disorder progresses and the addictive behaviors intensify.
2. Symptoms of Addiction-According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Psychiatric Disorders, the symptoms of sex addiction are: a) distress about a pattern of repeated sexual relationships involving a succession of lovers who are experienced by the individual only as things to be used, b) compulsive searching for multiple partners, c) compulsive fixation on an unattainable partner, d) compulsive masturbation, compulsive love relationships and/or compulsive sexuality in a relationship, e) extensive use of pornography, phone sex, cyber sex or other illegal activities like sex with a prostitute or fellow sex addicts.
3. What Causes Sex Addiction? a) one theory is that since antidepressants and other psychotropic medications have proven effective in treating some people with sex addiction, some suggest that biochemical abnormality or other brain changes increase risk; b) other studies indicate that food, drug abuse and sexual interests share a common pathway within our brains’ survival and reward systems; which thus short circuits the area of reason and sends a signal that compulsive sexual behavior is necessary for survival; c) people addicted to sex get a sense of euphoria and use sexual activity to seek pleasure, avoid unpleasant feelings or respond to outside stressors, d) research also has found that sex addicts often come from dysfunctional families (i.e. addiction present at home or parent’s ridged and uncaring); e) and are more likely than non-sex addicts to have been abused.
