Dandruff is very common. Men and women can both have different. This condition is characterized by flaking and itching of the scalp.
It is a chronic scalp condition that causes scalp to itch and flake. This condition is not contagious but it can be bothersome especially when it is extremely itchy. Aside from that, it is also difficult to treat especially in severe cases.
The symptoms of dandruff can be easily spotted whether it is teens or adults. Usually, white flakes or spots can be seen on the hair. These oily flakes of dead skin would even fall off the shoulders and you would feel an extremely itchy scalp. During the cold season, dandruff can worsen, making it more bothersome.
Generally speaking, most dandruff cases don’t need to be seen by a physician. However, if you are still experiencing dandruff even after you have tried the different over the counter treatment for dandruff, then you should consult your dermatologist to give you proper treatment.
There are many causes for dandruff. Having dry skin is usually the main cause of dandruff. The dry skin would often cause flaking and dandruff. The flakes from dry skin are usually smaller and not oily compared to other causes of dandruff.
However, those who have oily skin or medically termed as seborrheic dermatitis are also predisposed to develop dandruff. Usually, the flakes are oily and the scalp is red. The flakes are usually yellowish.
Aside from these skin conditions, hygiene can also cause dandruff. People who do not frequently wash or not shampooing their hair enough. If you are not going to regularly wash your hair, then the oils and the dead skin cells can build up on your scalp causing dandruff.
Almost anyone can have dandruff but there are also risk factors that can predispose a person to have dandruff. Usually, dandruff starts during puberty when the oil glands become active. Poor diet is also associated with this condition. If you are suffering from dandruff and it is really bothering you, then you should consider consulting your physician. Although this condition may seem simple, it can be bothersome and seeking treatment may be necessary.
